The New Rochelle
Day Nursery is a non-profit organization, licensed by the
New York State Office of Children and Family Services and
accredited by the National Association for the Education of
Young Children (NAEYC). The Nursery was established in 1895
to meet the needs of working parents or those pursuing further
education. The New Rochelle Day Nursery is proud to be the
first day care center licensed in New York State.
The Nursery currently serves children 18 months through
5 years of age. The hours of operation are from 7:30AM to
6:00PM, 50 weeks a year. The Nursery observes eleven legal
holidays and one professional training day and is closed the
last two weeks in August.
Parents are encouraged to attend workshops, parent meetings
and special events which occur throughout the year. Workshops
are designed to inform parents of current trends in parenting
skills and other important related social issues. A parent
representative is on the Board of Directors.
Volunteers are an integral part of the New Rochelle Day Nursery
community. They provide reading hours, mentoring, office and
class assistance. The Board of Directors of the New Rochelle
Day Nursery are members of the community who are elected for
a specific term and who serve uncompensated. The Board of
Directors oversees all the business and affairs of the Day
Nursery.
Some of the things that our children benefit from:
- Pre-K and Kindergarten curricula which are consistent
with that used by the New Rochelle Public Schools.
- Excellent student-teacher ratios.
- Developmentally appropriate educational practices and
materials.
- Activities that enhance intellectual growth, critical
thinking and discovery.
- Excellent preparation in the basic readiness skills for
success in further learning.
- Computers in each classroom which are utilized to address
individual learning styles.
- A library which serves as a media center which includes
a large selection of children’s books, video tapes,
computer software and opportunities for on-line use.
- Field trips which include theater, museums, zoos and neighborhood
places of interest.
- In addition to excellent academic preparation provided
for the children, equal emphasis is placed on the development
of social skills. In a very nurturing environment, opportunities
are provided for children to interact in a setting which
includes family style dining. Designation of responsibilities
encourages leadership skills and fosters the development
of self-confidence.
